Please fill out our ADOPTION APPLICATION after you have read our requirements and process below if you are interested in adopting.

Adoption Requirements

We REQUIRE that all guinea pigs we adopt out be housed INDOORS in Cubes and Coroplast cages or cages of equal size.

  C&C size required
size in inches
1 cavy 2x3 grid 30" x 45"
2 cavies
2x3 grid
30" x 45"
3 cavies
2x4 grid
30" x 60"
4 cavies
2x5 grid
30" x 75"

We REQUIRE a $25 adoption fee per guinea pig to help cover the expenses involved with running a rescue. In order to promote the adoption of older guinea pigs, the adoption fee is waived for guinea pigs 4 years and older.

We DO adopt out single guinea pigs if we are sure they are going to a home where they will be given exceptional care and will have ample cage space. We prefer that they still live next to another guinea pig because cavies crave interaction with others.

We DO adopt out guinea pigs as presents as long as the child is aware that they are receiving a guinea pig and participate in the entire adoption process (ie: helping their parents fill out the Adoption Application and visiting FFGPR to learn about proper guinea pig care).

adoption process

There are 5 steps in our adoption process to ensure that each adopter finds the perfect guinea pig and each guinea pig finds a great forever home!

1) APPLICATION
Adopters must fill out our adoption application and submit it to us. It is recommended that adopters research guinea pig care before filling out the application! Please visit our links page for a list of recommended websites. The application will either be approved or clarification will be asked (by email). Please allow up to a week for a response.

2) EDUCATION VISIT
A time will be determined (preferably during the weekend) when the adopter will come for a half-hour visit to Furry Friends Guinea Pig Rescue. (Please be aware that this is a privately run rescue in Grace's home) At that time, the adopter will learn about all aspects of proper guinea pig care, including housing, food, and behavior. The adopter will also have the chance to meet the guinea pigs currently in the rescue and potentially choose the guinea pig/s he/she wishes to adopt.

(Please note that the education visit can be combined with the adoption visit if the adopter lives over 45 minutes from the rescue and has done sufficient research about guinea pig care. In this case, the adopter must contact FFGPR and make the appropriate arrangements.)

3) PREPARATION
At this time the adopter prepares for his/her new piggy arrivals! If the type of guinea pig the adopter requested is not currently at Furry Friends, the adopter will be informed (by email) when a specific pig does arrive (or the adopter can check our pet list and email us when he/she sees the guinea pig he/she would like)! In the mean time, a lot of preparation will need to be done for the new additions like buying supplies, building or ordering a cage, and possibly doing some more cavy research.

The following supplies are required in order to adopt a cavy:
(a wonderful, inexpensive place to find shavings, pellets, and hay is Back to Nature Feed Store: 1176 Middletown Rd, Media, PA 19063, (610) 459-2305)

  • Cage (see Cavy Cages)
  • Shavings (Carefresh or Aspen)
  • Pellets (with NO nuts)
  • Timothy hay (see Oxbow Hay)
  • Water bottles (32 oz. preferred)
  • Food bowls (or Gravity Bin Feeder)
  • Hidey houses (one per cavy)

4) ADOPTION VISIT
Once the adopter has made all the necessary preparations for his/her new guinea pig and he/she has chosen the cavies he/she wishes to adopt, a time will be set up (preferably on weekends) where the adopter will come to Furry Friends and bring his/her new companions home.
FFGPR will make sure the adopter has made all preparations, such as correct cage size, enough supplies, etc, and the adoption contract will then be signed. The adopter will pay the adoption fee ($25.00 per guinea pig) and the cavies will go to their new home!

5) FOLLOW-UP
To make sure that the guinea pigs have adjusted well to their new home, a follow up email or phone call is required within the 1st month of adoption. The adopter can contact FFGPR if there is a concern, comment, or question about the guinea pigs. Also, remember that if ever an adopted guinea pig can no longer be cared for by the adopter, the guinea pig must be returned to FFGPR rather than to an animal shelter or other location.
